Sarah Den Boer is a student from the The University of Western Australia. Sarah undertook the Indonesian Language Short Course at Satya Wacana University in Salatiga with the assistance of a $3,000 New Colombo Plan Mobility Grant in 2020.
Q: Why did you decide to undertake ACICIS’ Indonesian Language Short Course?
I undertook ILSC because I’m an Indonesian language student and I knew this program would help me improve my language abilities. I already participated in an ACICIS semester program the previous year and I found ACICIS to be very helpful and professional, and they took the stress out of living in Indonesia for five months. I was keen to take part in another ACICIS program to benefit from in-country learning again.
Q: Did you receive a New Colombo Plan Mobility Grant? If so, how did this contribute to your experience in Indonesia?
I did. It meant I didn’t have to worry about money at all whilst being away.
Q: What did you find to be the most challenging about the ILSC?
Since I am only in Indonesia for a short time, I found it hard to get into my study, as I just want to ‘jalan-jalan’ and visit all the nature places in the area and enjoy the culture!
Q: How will your proficiency in Indonesian Language gained through the Indonesian Language Short Course influence your future career or study?
It will be a crucial step in making me a proficient speaker that is essential to becoming an Indonesian language teacher in Australia.
Q: How different is in-country Indonesian language learning to your previous experience learning Indonesian in Australia?
I have been taking an Indonesian major at my home university. We only have a couple classes a week, so it is easy to forget new words or structure between classes. Having constant practise every day cements the language in my mind, and hearing natives speak also helps to consolidate learning done in Australia.
Q: Would you like to return to Indonesia for future study or work?
Indeed!
Q: What did you enjoy most about the course?
Having most of the afternoons free to sightsee or play sport.
Q: What did you like to do in your spare time in Salatiga?
I love to go running, the cooler temperature is ideal for it compared to a Perth summer! I also like to ‘nongkrong’ with friends and join in with local Bible studies or church services.
