Chris Matthews is a 2017 New Colombo Plan Mobility Grant recipient from Murdoch University. Chris is undertaking the Development Studies Immersion Program at Gadjah Mada University.
Q: Why did you decide to undertake the ACICIS program?
The ACICIS program is a perfect way to experience studying and living in Indonesia. There have been great opportunities to travel and see other parts of Indonesia and being in Jogja for 5 months has given me a perspective that I would never have gotten as a tourist.
Q: How will the Development Studies Immersion Program influence your future career or study?
This program has given me experience in sustainable tourism throughout Indonesia and will provide a solid foundation for any opportunities that present themselves throughout Indonesia
Q: How does development in Indonesia differ to what you’ve seen before?
There are many grassroots projects with very passionate people who are happy to work hard in order to get the job done
Q: What do you like to do in your spare time in Yogyakarta?
I like to check out the coffee shops, play music with friends and sample the variety of local foods
Q: Are you undertaking an internship while in Indonesia?
Yes, I am at a tourism company and have been given responsibilities such as English teaching, developing learning packages, running events and MC at events
Q: What is your favourite food/place to eat?
Can’t go past the vegan tofu sate at Loving Hut
Q: What is your favourite Indonesian word/phrase:
Tidak apa apa, literally translates to ‘no what what’, however means no worries
Q: What places in Indonesia have you visited during your semester so far?
I have travelled a lot and gone to many places such as Pantai Nglambor, Prambanan, Borobudur, Ubud, Bandung, Merapi, Imogiri – all amazing!
