Chelsie Baldwin is a Diploma of Languages/Bachelor of Art History and Curatorship student from The Australian National University. Chelsie undertook the Virtual Indonesian Language Short Course in January-February 2022.
Q: Why did you decide to undertake ILSC?
I was exposed to Indonesian history and culture through a number of my university courses. This inspired me to want to learn the language. Participating in the ILSC was a way for me to learn the language in an immersive and fast paced environment.
Q: What did you find to be the most rewarding part of this virtual experience?
The teachers, staff and participants were all very friendly and engaging. It made learning the language and participating in the extracurricular activities both fun and enjoyable.
Q: What do you find to be the most challenging about the ILSC?
Starting the program with absolutely no knowledge of Bahasa Indonesia was challenging, as the content was intense from day one. As the course went on however the intensive classes became easier to follow. This form of learning was no doubt incredibly beneficial. The amount of language and culture exposure we received during these lessons was immense, and means that we now understand a number of words in Bahasa Indonesia and have gained significant knowledge of Indonesian culture in such a short time.
Q: Were you able to learn about the Indonesian culture from this virtual program? If yes, how was this achieved?
By interviewing locals about things such as their hobbies, favourite food and home town we were able to gain a deep understanding of Indonesian culture from the virtual program. The seminars and culture sharing sessions also provided insight into Indonesian culture.
Q: What have you enjoyed most about the course?
The whole course was interactive, organised, and incredibly informative. I enjoyed everything about it.
Q: How will your proficiency in Indonesian Language gained through the ILSC influence your future career or study?
The Indonesian Language proficiency I gained through the ILSC will form the foundation of my future studies. I will definitely continue my studies in Bahasa Indonesia and hope to use the language and culture skills I learnt through the ILSC vocationally in the future.
