ACICIS Relocating to New Host University

CANBERRA – Tuesday, October 13, 2015. After 20 years of being hosted by Murdoch University, the Australian Consortium for ‘In-Country’ Indonesian Studies (ACICIS) Perth Secretariat office will next year find a new host in The University of Western Australia (UWA).

With offices also in Yogyakarta and Jakarta, ACICIS’ Secretariat is the administrative hub of the consortium, providing services and support to students, member universities, school teachers and educators in Australia as well as its Indonesian offices.

As a consortium of 22 Australian and two international member universities, ACICIS is hosted by a member university for infrastructural support.

“I would like to extend my sincerest thanks and gratitude to Murdoch University which has supported and hosted the Consortium since its inception,” says Consortium Director, Professor David T. Hill AM. “As ACICIS continues to grow and develop new offerings, we look forward to working closely with our new host, UWA.”

Part of the prestigious Group of Eight and home to the Perth USAsia Centre, UWA recently hosted a visit by former Indonesian President His Excellency Professor Doctor Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who is a Visiting Professor at UWA. The university is well positioned to assist the Consortium as ACICIS develops three new program offerings, two of which are in the hard sciences, in 2016/2017.

Murdoch University has supported ACICIS to grow from an initial concept in 1994 to an international educational consortium offering both Indonesian and English-medium semester-long and professional practicum programs with many of Murdoch’s staff being instrumental to new program development.

The transfer of host will be officially announced by Prof David Hill at ACICIS’ 20th Anniversary Evening Cocktail Event at Parliament House in Canberra on Tuesday 13 October.

Following a record-breaking semester in 2015, with 72 students studying in Indonesia through ACICIS in January – July, the consortium is hoping for similar numbers next year. In August ACICIS was awarded $2.1 million in New Colombo Plan mobility grants. Deadlines for our 2016 Professional Practica, as well as Yogyakarta semester programs beginning January 2016 have been extended to 23 October 2015.
