In August 2017, ACICIS welcomed 3 students on the Agriculture Semester Program at Bogor Agricultural University (IPB). All students were recipients of a New Colombo Plan Mobility Grant and have now completed their studies at IPB and their professional placements in various institutions related to the agriculture sector. The students concluded their semester with a final presentation delivered before IPB and ACICIS staff, and colleagues from their host organisations.

Michael Young (The University of Western Australia), a Bachelor of Science student, undertook his internship at PT BLST (Bogor Life Science Technology) in Bogor. This professional placement gave Michael the opportunity to work on two projects. In the Katulac project, the team used the Katuk plant to increase cow production rates. Michael also took part in the Tropical Fruit Nursery project and during his placement he learnt about business and marketing practices.

Elodie Tanner (The University of Western Australia), an Agricultural Science and Conservation Biology student, had the opportunity to undertake a placement at IMARF (Indonesian Mangrove Restoration Foundation) in Jakarta. Elodie was involved in IMARF’s conservation and mangrove planting activities at the Marunda site. Elodie also significantly improved her public speaking skills and visited local schools to educate students on the importance of mangrove conservation and cultivation in Indonesia.

Scarlet Ng  (University of Sydney), a Bachelor of Food and Agribusiness student, had the opportunity to undertake a placement at a social enterprise institution, AgriSocio in Bogor. She assisted and worked on a wide range of business activities out in the field, in the production house, and in the office. Scarlet also assisted with the design of marketing materials for the organisation to generate demand for farmer’s production. During her placement, Scarlet had the opportunity to establish new networks in Indonesia by attending conferences with AgriSocio staff.

The semester was wrapped-up with a farewell dinner attended by staff, students and pendamping (student helpers). We could not be more proud of the students’ accomplishment this semester. Congratulations to our three Semester 45 participants. We wish all students the best of luck in their future endeavours!
