Linyu Qiu was a participant in the 2020 Business Professional Practicum from The University of Melbourne. Linyu is studying a Bachelor of Commerce.
Q: Why did you decide to undertake ACICIS’ Business Professional Practicum?
Firstly, I wanted to study a new language within the country. And I also wanted the opportunity to practice the language with local people and work in a different environment.
Secondly, it is a good experience to work in an organisation to apply my knowledge with a mentor to help us better understand what we should do in the company.
Lastly, I wanted to know more about Indonesia, make friends there, and to be honest, exchange this experience for one subject.
Q: How will the Business Professional Practicum benefit or influence your future career?
Firstly, I had the experience to work and study in another Asian country, which will be a highlight on my resume. If my future company has planning on expanding in to Indonesia, I could assist with this development.
Secondly, I learned how corporate finance departments work in a company, which has always been a blind spot for me. This will help me more if I was to work as an accountant in a corporation. This experience has enriched my life and helped me to capture my interest and create my career path.
Lastly, the work experience even enhanced my goal of working as a business analyst, who can help reduce manual errors by researching the organisations Enterprise Resources Planning system.
Q: Which organisation did you intern with? What were your responsibilities?
I interns with PT Jababeka Tbk in the corporate finance analyst field.
My tasks included working on compiling data for their annual report, i.e. doing financial analysis and market research.
Q: How did you find the work culture of your host organisation? How was it different to work experience in Australia?
Everyday communication was infrequent because I didn’t want to interrupt the daily work of the organisation.
Before coming here, I did not have any work experience in Australia. However, if I were to compare the work environment to China, I can say that the environment is more stressful in China, where staff often have KPI’s to meet and they work a lot of overtime without salary.
Q: What do you like to do in your spare time in Indonesia?
Actually, I have planned an accountant certification examination on March. I spent all my spare time on study even after work or on weekends.
