ACICIS’ Indonesian Business, Law and Society (IBLS) program is a semester program based in Yogyakarta at Indonesia’s oldest private university, Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII). During the semester, students can study units within UII’s Faculties of Law or Economics. As part of IBLS, students also have the option to undertake a professional placement (internship) with leading Indonesian institutions and NGOs in the fields of business, economics, law and society.
For Semester 48 (January – July 2019), ACICIS welcomed three students, Georgia Eagleton from the University of Western Australia, Mikaylie Page from Macquarie University, and Samuel Denton from Flinders University to study in Indonesia on the IBLS program. Mikaylie and Sam, who each received a New Colombo Plan Mobility Grant, chose to undertake a professional placement (internship) with local NGOs in Yogyakarta.
Mikaylie completed a professional placement with the Centre for Human Rights Studies of the Islamic University of Indonesia (Pusat Studi Hak Asasi Manusia UII” (PUSHAM UII)). Mikaylie was assigned a research project that focused on religious freedom in Yogyakarta.
Sam interned at a newly established event organiser, Helvetica Events. During his placement, Sam had the opportunity to help Helvetica Events staff in marketing and promotion.
After completing their internship, Mikaylie and Sam presented their research project to UII assessors, PUSHAM UII, Helvetica Events, and ACICIS representatives. Mikaylie presented her research on “Recognition of Adat Religious Believers in the Kulon Progo District of Yogyakarta”. Meanwhile, Sam presented his research on “Culture and Business: A Brief Report on the Effect of Culture on the Performance of a Small Business”.
Georgia chose to take a full-time semester load of classes from UII’s Faculty of Law. Georgia took six classes addressing different interests, Constitutional Law, International Law, Adat law, Islamic Contract and Business Law, Islamic Criminal Law, and Environmental Law.
Congratulations to Mikaylie, Sam, and Georgia! We are all very proud of you all. Thank you for a wonderful semester – we wish you the best of luck in your future endeavours!
