Alana Griffiths is a New Colombo Plan mobility grant recipient from Western Sydney University. Alana undertook the Agriculture Semester Program at Bogor Agricultural University.
Q: Why did you decide to undertake ACICIS’ Agriculture Semester Program?
Because I thought is would be an amazing opportunity to expand my learning in my studies of agriculture and also within myself.
Q: What classes/units are you currently enrolled in?
- Principles of Plant Breeding – lecture and practical on the basics of plant genetics and breeding.
- Principles of Crop Protection – Lecture and laboratory work on common plant diseases and pests.
- Dynamics of Agribusiness Markets – Lecture on Indonesian agribusiness and marketing strategies.
- Food Processing Technology – Lecture on a wide range of food processing technologies.
- Basic Bahasa Indonesia – beginners classes in Indonesian language.
Q: How has your study in Indonesia influenced your understanding of Agriculture or Food Security in the region?
My study has definitely broadened my understanding of agriculture in Indonesia. The practices, climate and plants grown here are very different to Australia, so it is interesting to see a different perspective.
Q: What do you like to do in your spare time in Bogor?
Just hanging out at my kos or with friends. Also sampling all the new foods I haven’t tried here yet!
Q: Are you undertaking an internship while in Indonesia?
I undertook an internship at The Learning Farm in Cianjur. It is an educational facility for vulnerable youth where they teach organic farming and other skills.
Q: What is your favourite Indonesian food?
Ketoprak.
Q: Favourite place to eat?
Just a warung on Bara, I am not sure of the name.
Q: Favourite Indonesian word/phrase?
Malu or tidak apa apa.
Q: What places in Indonesia have you visited during your semester so far?
Bali, Lombok, Pontianak, Bintan Island, Thousand Islands Yogyakarta and Pelabuhan Ratu.
Q: Your testimonial regarding IPB?
IPB was an amazing place to study agriculture. They offer international classes and the facilities are amazing. I am really grateful for my opportunity to study at IPB and won’t forget how friendly and helpful all the students and teachers there were.
