In April 2018 ACICIS was delighted to host five boys from Scotch College, Perth, in Yogyakarta, with two teachers accompanying their trip throughout their time in-country. Their eight-day tour in Indonesia involved ten hours of language classes and three hours of one-on-one tutorials at Sanata Dharma University’s Language Centre, one workshop and a number of exciting field trips.
Aside from their language classes, the students had an opportunity to participate in the Jamu workshop at Sanata Dharma University’s Language Centre, where they learned how to make the traditional Indonesian herbal medicine Jamu. They were also given the opportunity to practice their Indonesian in real life contexts by participating in the Out-of-Class Learning Activities during their tutorials, some of which were organised by the Language Centre and a couple of others by the accompanying teachers.
Participants proved their crafting abilities by participating in a silver workshop at HS Silver in the famous old town of Yogyakarta, also known as Kota Gede, followed by a walking tour of Kota Gede’s old town exploring and learning about the traditional Javanese houses. While on their walking tour, the participants also visited the royal cemetery and got to dress up in traditional Javanese clothing!
ACICIS worked together with a local NGO to organise a Desa Kota tour, where the participants were learning about the community life and sustainable programs that have been established in the Code village in Yogykarta. As part of their language practice, the students had to interview and practice their conversation skills with the residents of the village.
The participants also had the opportunity to hike the Nglanggeran Ancient Volcano and visited the permaculture farm in Imogiri where they discussed environmental issues with the farmers.
Thank you to all Scotch College participants. It has been great to host you again for your sixth ACICIS School Tour – we look forward to seeing you again.
