ACICIS was excited to welcome sixteen students and two teachers from Helena College, Perth, to Yogyakarta at the beginning of this year in early April 2018. Their eleven-day adventure in Yogyakarta was packed with fun activities and learning about the Indonesian culture, and also included Indonesian language classes at Sanata Dharma University’s Language Centre. The students from Helena College participated in fourteen hours of language classes and five hours of one-on-one tutorials which were taught by experienced Bahasa Indonesia teachers at Santa Dharma University’s Language Centre.
Fun filled activities awaited them here in Yogyakarta, the Helena College participants had the opportunity to craft their own piece of silver jewelry in Kota Gede, Yogyakarta’s old town that is famous for its silversmiths. The students and teachers also had the chance to walk around Kota Gede admiring the colonial architecture and visiting the royal cemetery.
The participants tried to use their Indonesian language skills at every opportunity during their tour in Yogyakarta, especially when given the opportunity to buy their own ingredients at a local market to cook an Indonesian dishes, and enjoying a scenic bicycle ride around the nearby village through beautiful rice fields on their way to the market.
The fun didn’t stop there, the participants enjoyed a very exciting jeep tour on the foot of Mount Merapi on a Jeeps and through various terrains. The participants also got enjoy cave tubing, drifting through the beautiful kalisuci river.
