Michael Young is a 2017 New Colombo Plan Mobility Grant recipient from the University of Western Australia. Michael is studying a Bachelor of Science majoring in Agricultural Science.
Michael completed the Agriculture Semester Program at Bogor Agricultural University in August-December 2017.
Q: Why did you decide to undertake the ACICIS program?
It fitted in well with my course at UWA in Agricultural Science and I thought it would be good to experience a different culture and view on Agriculture. It is more enjoyable than staying in Australia and studying!
Q: What classes are you currently enrolled in?
- Animal breeding – genetics based unit about improving animal traits.
- Animal product technology – basic unit about animal products and also contains genetics.
- Basic food characteristics and materials – introduction into food products focus on animals, vegetables and processed foods.
- Entrepreneurial experience – develop and market a product.
Q: How has your study in Indonesia influenced your understanding of Agriculture or Food Security in the region?
It is very under developed compared to Australia but there are a lot of people researching and developing Agriculture. It is very small scale, with a high population, so they try to get the best possible production but also to keep their input costs low.
Q: What do you like to do in your spare time in Bogor?
Eat, gym, travel, see friends and sleep.
Q: Are you undertaking an internship while in Indonesia?
Yes, BLST is a big company owned by IPB. I will help test and market a product designed to increase cow milk production.
Q: What is your favourite food?
Sate ayam.
