ACICIS 20th Anniversary Events
In 2015 ACICIS, along with support from other universities and organisations, organised three main 20th Anniversary events in Melbourne, Yogyakarta and Canberra.
In 2016, ACICIS concludes it’s 20th Anniversary year with a celebration at the consortium’s new host university, The University of Western Australia.

ACICIS, in association with the Australia-Indonesia Youth Association (AIYA) – Victoria Chapter, held a 20th anniversary event at the Sidney Myer Asia Centre on the 1st July.
Ms Grace Dong (Semester 39/Aug 2014), Dr Dave McRae (Semester 6/Feb 1998) and President of AIYA Victoria, Mr Daniel Brooks, gave speeches on the significance of ACICIS on a personal level, and to the Australia-Indonesia relationship more broadly.
Consortium Director, Professor David T. Hill, who was in Melbourne to present on ACICIS at the Indonesia Council Open Conference, also gave a presentation and cut a special anniversary cake.
Finally, guests were treated to a wonderful performance by Melbourne folk musician, Ayleen O’Hanlon (Semester 25/Aug 2007).
We would like to thank AIYA Victoria for assistance organising the event, and The University of Melbourne and Asialink, for the in-kind support they kindly provided.

ACICIS held a 20th anniversary celebration and reunion weekend in Yogyakarta from the 28 to 30 August, 2015.
The weekend included a Friday cocktail function with attendees hearing from the Member of Perth, the Hon Alannah MacTiernan MP. Conference sessions on Saturday included discussions on the value of ACICIS to the Australia-Indonesia relationship, ACICIS’ value to member and partner universities and the impact ACICIS has on students. University representatives from Charles Darwin University, Griffith University, Gadjah Mada University, Parahyangan University and The University of Sydney were on the panel of these discussions.
ACICIS alumni Esther Sainsbury (Semester 22/Feb 2006 & Semester 23/Aug 2006), Aidan Hoy (Semester 20/Feb 2005), Jacqui Baker (Semester 10/Feb 2000), Linda Yan (Semester 1/Aug 1995 & Semester 2/Feb 1996) and Penny Coutas (Semester 13/Aug 2001 & Semester 14/Feb 2002) also had the opportunity to speak and discuss the significance ACICIS has had on their lives and careers.
Over dinner on Saturday ACICIS alumni Luke Arnold (Semester 10/Feb 2000) and Gary Dean (Semester 4/Feb 1997) reminisced on their time with ACICIS.
On Sunday, guests were given time to explore Yogyakarta and enjoy rafting, tubing and cultural activities in the area.
We would like to thank all the guests who joined us for the weekend, particularly those who spoke and shared their experiences.

An evening cocktail function at Parliament House, Canberra for alumni, supporters and partner organisation representatives was held on Tuesday, 13 October, 2015. Over 100 guests helped ACICIS to celebrate our 20th Anniversary in Mural Hall.
The night included speeches from the following attendees:
- Senator Richard Colbeck, Minister for International Education;
- HE Mr Nadjib Riphat Kosoema, Indonesian Ambassador to Australia;
- Professor David T Hill AM, ACICIS Consortium Director; and
- Mr Jeremy Stringer (Semester 1/Aug 1995), Assistant Director, Development Partnership, DFAT and ACICIS alumnus.
ACICIS was pleased to officially announce the upcoming relocation of the ACICIS Perth Secretariat from Murdoch University to The University of Western Australia early next year.
We would like to thank the volunteers from the Australia-Indonesia Youth Association (AIYA) – Australian Capital Territory Chapter. Your assistance was much appreciated.

In August 2016, ACICIS held an evening cocktail function at the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery at The University of Western Australia. The event concluded ACICIS’ 20th anniversary year celebrations, which began in July 2015, marking 20 years since the very first semester cohort of ACICIS students arrived at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta in August 1995 for a year in-country.
On the night, the Office of the Pro Vice-Chancellor International officially welcomed ACICIS to its new home at The University of Western Australia. The evening was attended by federal Members of Parliament: Ms Madeleine King MP and Mr Matthew Keogh MP, Members of the Parliament of Western Australia: Mr Peter Tinley AM MLA, Ms Susan Ellery MLC, Ms Kate Doust MLC, Mr Bill Johnston MLA, and Ms Janine Freeman MLA, Bapak Ade Padmo Sarwono, the Indonesian Consul-General Perth, ACICIS alumni from 1995 through to 2016, ACICIS member university representatives and Pro-Vice Chancellors, and representatives from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
ACICIS would like to thank all of our alumni, supporters, and staff for their support during our 20th year celebrations, and together we look forward to the next 20 years of ACICIS.
